Student Volunteers

Every day in Hamilton children go to school hungry, people line up at soup kitchens, youth need help to succeed in school, and adults with disabilities are in need of assistance. Student Open Circles mobilizes weekly teams of McMaster University students to be hands that provide food or assistance, minds that teach, and hearts that care.

Through our Commununity  Volunteer Action (CVA) program, we:

  • Recruit and train weekly volunteers at children's breakfast programs, afterschool clubs, homework help centres, shelters, and programs for people living with disability throughout Hamilton
  • Encourage volunteers to learn and grow from their service by facilitating group reflection each time they volunteer
  • Provide training and leadership development for student facilitators of our weekly groups
  • Organizes educational and awareness raising events for volunteers and the McMaster community

Funding for this program is provided in part by the United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton and the Hamilton Community Foundation (Martin, Malloch, and Edith Turner Foundation Funds). Community Volunteer Action is recognized and supported as a working group of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group.
