Quotations can be an inspiring way to initiate reflection. There are many ways to use quotations in a reflection activity. For example:
- Fill a hat or envelope with small pieces of paper containing different quotations and then have each group member take one. Each person reads their quotation out loud and gives their own response, and then any other group members can comment or discuss.
- Hand out a page with several quotations and have each person choose one that expresses their feelings of the day and then expand on it.
- Read a quotation and then take five minutes for everyone to draw their response using art supplies. See Hope for the Community (in 15 minute Creative Reflection Activities) for an example of reflecting through art.
The best quotations for discussion are open to a variety of interpretations, and it can be helpful to introduce several quotations that represent a range of views.
